French Modernism on show in Padua
Fifty-nine works from the extraordinary European collection of the Brooklyn Museum, the second largest art museum in New York and one of the largest in the United States, are on display in Padua in the delightful setting of Palazzo Zabarella.
The exhibition recounts one of the most fascinating centuries in art history, when artists moved away from the academic artistic tradition to focus on subjects of everyday life, celebrating France as the artistic centre of international modernism from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
On display are paintings and sculptures by forty-five of the leading artists of the time, representing the avant-garde movements that defined modern art from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
